With glowing reviews coming in for the compelling new drama from Lynn Shelton, approving eyes and hearts are in line to applaud her latest gem “Outside In”. From her early work for the indie film “Humpday” which got a standing ovation at Cannes, we already knew she was a star in the making. She then went on to direct the charming “Laggies” starring Kiera Knightley, Chloe Grace Moretz and Kaitlyn Dever whom she is reunited with on “Outside In”. Her ability to craft the evolution of characters caught up in awkward situations and then to their resolution ensures grounded stories steeped in an organic progression.

In “Outside In”, we see 3 seemingly lost souls including ex-con Chris (Jay Duplass), a prisoner advocate Carol (Edie Falco) and her impressionable daughter Hildy (Kaitlyn Dever) in a love triangle that’s rather perplexing. There’s the very married Carol and the tender age of Hildy that should be barriers to impending passion yet there’s a soulful desire between each of them borne of the need for deeper connection. Under her adept direction, Lynn has successfully coaxed her talented cast to depict sentiments that cover the emotional scale. One could say buzz is heading her way as she delivers one of the most fascinating features at this year’s TIFF.

She’s also directed several episodes from some of the biggest hits on TV namely “Fresh Off The Boat”, “Casual” and “Master Of None” as well as new shows “Santa Clarita Diet” and “Glow”. Lynn is on the path to be a film-maker with the golden touch as she shimmers with solid verve.
